But it didn’t make any influence to us, we didn’t most the English search engine marketing and English B2C. Kind of a small trading company.

and I saw many white guy began to talke about the rank in baidu, how to konw more about baidu, as the PPC in china is only controled by baidu so far, other potential competitor isn’t strong enough to beat with it.

and I’m gonna say, baidu is stupid enough, the technology is far behind google, I can easily make a good rank in baidu. the only purpose is just for fun.

Like my Chinese personal blog dengshaowei.com

I’m focusing to write something about SEM, also SEO and web analytics and ecommerce.

and you can see my keyword rank about the SEM, here is the screanshot

haha, I’m the second one

you see, the first one is baidu him self..

even though it doesn’t provide any information, just the basic concept of SEM in chinese.

and it ranks the best.

Don’t trust some easy baidu guide, mostly it’s just like google.

but sadly i don’t do service for baidu, because I’m working in the english search engine marketing, as I think google will still be back one day to beat baidu’s ass and kick the fake chinese company out of china.

It’s said there was a discussion about the direction for baidu, one is to follow up the google’s way, making the global chinese information entrance, making it search; the other one is to make fast money in whatever way, search engine need money to expand, they said, no matter game, SMS, or popout advertising.

and it is said this argument is confirmed by Robin Li, who believe that making money is the most important one.

From Tangos

Baidu is a liar.

On December 1st, 2009, Baidu closed its previous paid search ads system, and fully switched into the new Phoenix Nest system. But on December, we found that the concept of the new system is still old.

Traditionally, Baidu made its paid search listings on its search result pages, most of the users of the search engine cannot differentiate ads from organic search results. They are confused by paid and non-paid results.

In Nov 2008, China Central Television (“CCTV”), the largest state-owned television network in China, reported that Baidu took money from illegal medical companies for paid search results. The more they pay, the higher up their name appear in the search results page. The paid search results undermined the integrity of the search experience.

Immediately after that, Baidu announced that it would introduce a new ads system, i.e. Phoenix Nest, which will more clearly separates its paid links from ordinary search results. In April 2009, Baidu pilot launched its new ads system. Phonenix Nest system is a totally new system in terms of advertising management, it is very similar to Google’s Adwords system. As to the media reports on Phoenix Nest, on its new system, the sponsored results will only be listed on the right of the search results pages, and separated from organic results.

In Nov, Baidu announced that the old ads system will be totally replaced by Phoenix Nest on Dec 1st. On a report by China Daily on Nov 30, it said, “the new stem will clearly distinguish search ads from normal, or organic, search results. That means the controversial keyword advertising bidding system is going to step off the stage”.

However, on Dec 1st., I found that you can still see paid results mixed with non-paid results, just as previously. This new system still allow ads to be listed on the left, even though you need to refine the quality of your ads text to make it qualified to be listed on the left.

The new Phoenix Nest is still old in terms of its underlying paid search concept. An ordinary search users can still be confused by paid ads and non-paid search results.

I konw it happened, but my english isn’t good enough to translate all for baidu’s Phoenix Nest.

this is from Gordon, great!

Baidu officially retired the old PPC auction system, Classic Edition, as of 1 December 2009. All PPC keyword bidding are to run through the new system, Phoenix Nest.

The integration of the Classic Edition and Phoenix Nest happened on 30 November. During this system upgrade, Baidu shut down advertisers’ access to both the new system and the old system. Today, Baidu resumed the access to Phoenix Nest system.

Baidu has been allowing advertisers to concurrently run both systems (Classic Edition and Phoenix Nest) ever since the launch of Baidu’s Phoenix Nest. However, this Baidu PPC ad auction arrangement was not the ideal way for advertisers to manage their accounts that may have hundreds of thousands of keywords in each system. After the upgrade, you will have to only manage the campaigns in your Phoenix Nest account.

Regarding the display of PPC ads and organic search results, you will not find any significant difference on Baidu’s search results pages. However, based on search queries you will see 3 major different combinations of PPC sponsored ads and organic search results showing up on Baidu’s search engine result pages:

Search queries on high traffic keywords: 10 PPC ads followed by 10 organic search results on the left side and 8 PPC ads on the right side

Search queries on long tail keywords: 3 PPC ads followed by 10 organic search results on the left side and 8 PPC ads on the right side

Search queries on keywords that are below the quality threshold: 10 organic search results and 8 PPC ads on the right side

Classic Edition’s old account data is still available through the report section after this upgrade.

I believe this integration will bring new opportunities to marketers who are focusing on search engine marketing through Baidu. Phoenix Nest is an auction system that you are required to consider your Baidu PPC account’s quality which mainly consists of keyword quality. You should optimize by improving your Baidu PPC’s keywords quality. The old way of keyword bidding by focusing mainly on keyword CPC will be forced to change.

I konw it’s attractive, I hope you like it.

I’m a SEM people, I work both in baidu and in google.

At the beginning, I made lots of chinese weibsites, I can feel the technology and the level of both baidu and google.

I can say the baidu’s technology is far away from google, and it’s truth.

SO THE QUESTION IS: why the Google with great technology can not beat baidu in china?

This topic must be talked about for many years, but it’s my perspective for the development of chinese business, not only internet, but also other business in china.

Mainly I think it’s two parts, one is for the public relation(PR), but not only public, but also private relation, it’s said Baidu’s PR team can spread the baidu good news all over the chinese internet within 5 minutes.

Can you believe it? FIVE mintues

That means, anything bad about baidu they can also delete it within 5 minutes.

and it’s also said baidu’s PR team(group) is the second best PR team in china, with more than 500 people inside.

and you can see totally how many google people in china?

Another mainly thing is about the product, the community named tieba, and also the MP3, the zhidao

tieba.baidu.com

mp3.baidu.com

zhidao.baidu.com

and there are lots of similar communities around baidu.

It’s stupid though, but it’s useful to get the mainland chinese people, because many chinese people mainland are still not so educated, they just need a simple thing to get what they need, they don’t need technology, they just want to download, to talk, to play in the community.

In china, it’s simple.

So if you want to do business, remember two things, one is the relationship(GuanXi), the other is simple and easy to understand.

Baidu has officially launched its personalized homepage service (my.baidu.com) after being in beta since April 2008. The personalized homepage allows users to centralize personal information management, news reading, work, and entertainment into a single interface. By default, the personalized homepage displays popular stories, domestic news, music recommendations, website recommendations, video recommendations, and common queries, and integrates the company’s Baidu Post Bar, Baidu Knows, and Baidu Spaces services. It also supports RSS. Users can also specify their homepage’s style, layout, and functionality.

Baidu shared its third quarter earnings report last night, and the part that actually concerned the third quarter was quite positive – the Chinese search giant reported higher revenues and profits than most experts expected. Unfortunately for the company, its forecast for the fourth quarter then caused what can only be described as panic.

We’ll start with the good news, at least. Revenue rose 39 percent year over year, reaching $187.3 million. And Baidu’s earnings per share numbers blew forecasts out of the water, coming in at $2.16 instead of $1.83.

It’s the implementation of a new online marketing system called Phoenix Nest that is due to cause problems. When the Online Marketing Classic Edition is discontinued, Baidu expects a “temporary negative impact,” and believes that fourth-quarter revenue will wind up totaling between $174 million and $180 million.

Analysts were counting on something like $203 million. That’s a big difference, and competitors like Google will no doubt try to ensure Baidu never makes up the loss.

So Baidu’s shares are taking a beating on the stock market today; in fact, they’re down 12.79 percent at the moment. Google’s shares, meanwhile, have just dipped 1.43 percent.

18th August, 2009, in Baidu Technology Innovation Conference, Robin Li, CEO of Baidu.com announced its new concept (and platform) called “Box Computing” which reported by Chinese media and commented by experts: A Breakthrough in Chinese Internet industry; The technology which will lead Chinese web industry in near future.

What is Box Computing

“It’s all about the Search Box”, Robin says. “simple but could be unlimitedly powerful.” Users can ask for anything they need, no matter it’s a web page, or game, or online shopping, even virus-scanning and so on by using the search box. Baidu identifies the search requirements, connect to relevant service running in its backend (and probably in third party), retrieve the result and return it to user. The architecture of Box Computing is unveiled on its official site:

Box Computing vs. Cloud Computing

Is Box Computing a competitive technology against Cloud Computing? I need more time to understand both in details, but it seems for me that Cloud Computing focus more on the back end, i.e. the infrastructure of the services, the scalable computing etc, but Box Computing more concerns about the front end, i.e. the requirements from the users and how to meet the requirements.

What Excited Me

Almost none of Chinese web company really concerns about Technology or is confident enough to say, I am going to lead the technology. What excited me is that Baidu finally stands out to confirm that Baidu is the technology-driven company. I love the idea of Box Computing along with its core part Alading Open Platform which was announced in December 2008. In Alading open platform, the third party is allowed to submit its own service together with its structured data (such as Calendar, Table of Italian Serie A league etc) to Baidu’s search engine. With the open architecture, Baidu shows its ambition to become a technology leader which is hardly seen in China web.

What Confused Me

Box Computing, from the 1st second it’s announced, compliments are all over the Chinese main-stream media and feedback are tremendously good. I thumb up to Baidu because there is no doubt Box Computing and its Alading open platform might cause the change of Chinese Internet industry. But, is it really and completely new and will Baidu potentially become the leader of Internet technology just because of the Box? Is it something Google and some other search engines have been trying to achieve for a longer while? I am confused.

Well, we will see in next 1 or 2 years.

yes, that’s china.
when the products from different companies are the same, then the key point is to fight with the details of UI,UE, speed, service of the consultant ,and even the GuanXi.
and who becomes the first one to get the market, who’ll succeed.

but there is a website called douban(www.douban.com), it’s the best innovation in china, to share the life.

and also in shenzhen the second internet company is called XunLei(http://www.xunlei.com/), it’s a download software(C/S), the speed is the fastest with its core technology, but still facing the copyrights problem when they want to IPO, as it’s inlegal out of china.

had a coffee break with my new friend Guang Yao (english name is Justin), who is an avid social media guy, loving twitter, blogs, and other social online stuff. Here are some notes of what I got from our discussion this evening:

There is a coffee shop in Hangzhou city, China called “Beta Cafe” that is founded by some Alibaba Group execs. It has not spent any money on advertising, all of its customers come from word of mouth and SOCIAL MEDIA – blogs, social networks, etc – AND IS doing really well, as a token of chinese internet success and social networking.

We then talked about US internet, of course the google, ebay, amazon, twitter, and some other smaller sites. I’m not gonna bother writing about that, as this is an ENGLISH blog (haha) and you guys all know about this, and there’s tons of ENGLISH (amazing….) blogs talking about ENGLISH seo and internet marketing. Lets talk about these top chinese sites for those of you who don’t know:

I’m sure you may have heard, but if not, Alibaba Group is a major internet company in China, traded on the Hong Kong stock exchange (1688.hk. They own a portfolio of companies in ecommerce, listed below:

a) Alibaba International – this is the flagship site, which started as a bulliten board by Jack Ma in 1999 for manufacturers to post their products. It turned into a huge directory where factories and trading companies all over the world (well, mainly in China, but then again, theres most of the manufacturing these days) could promote their products to wholesalers, importers, and buyers.

b) Alibaba Domestic – in Chinese for chinese b2b transactions. Factories and Trading companies can sell to other chinese companies.

c) Tao Bao (www.taobao.com) – The Chinese ebay. Well, yea EBay tried to enter the chinese market a few years ago, and Tao Bao kicked its a$$! Tao Bao is free for both buyers and sellers though, so that may be a reason its such a dominent player. But Chinese love this site, and I would say is where 90% of chinese e-commerce is done. They also have an “amazon” fulfillment type system they’re working on, that will connect factories to buyers directly – with tao bao as the platform to “drop ship” direct to consumer (not taking on any inventory though)

d) Alipay – e-payment system. Basically the Chinese Paypal. 99% of the market share.

e) Alisoft – mainly a CRM system, it is cross promoted to its other channels in Alibaba and Tao Bao – and is how Alibaba attempts monetizes these other products, as they do not charge for usage on tao bao, nor do they charge much on alibaba china.

f) Alimama – an advertising platform, like google adwords and adsense. also another way it monetizes tao bao, with banner advertisements and the like.

Next we have Baidu , which is traded on the US NasDaq stock market (BIDU) is the dominant search engine in China, with approximately 75% market share of the search market here. Google China is trying to penetrate the market with maybe the 25% remaining market share, but Baidu still seems to dominate by a wide margin. They have the same business model as Google, selling sponsored advertisements, except they also have some advertisement IN THE ORGANIC results, not just on the left and the top. In addition to their flagship search engine, they also have:

payment system, shopping portal, and a new instant messaging tool. But there clear moneymaker is the baidu search engine.

Tencent, or more commonly known as QQ is a hugely successful Instant Messaging (IM) platform started and still based in the same city I live in now, Shenzhen. A private company (from as far as I can tell) this company makes the most profit of the 3, almost printing money.

Instant Messaging – A IM system like skype or MSN, with voice and video chat like those, But one cool feature I like is YOU’RE NAKED. Yea, you have a virtual “you” that is either a girl or a boy. You can then BUY clothing for your virtual person, picking shirts, pants, shoes, and accessories.

ONLINE GAMES make up 30% of its revenue, as the Chinese market loves to play online games, and Tencent’s games are really popular.

Pai Pai – C2C shopping site, a pretty much copy of tao bao.

Ten Pay – another alipay / paypal e-payment solution.

Other sites in china are more media (yahoo news) sites, that are also emerging with more products:
Sina.com
Sohu.com
163.com

What really amazes me, and was pointed out by the others tonight, is THEY ALL COPY EACH OTHER. And everyone has a product for every major internet function, payment, shopping, chat, etc. We discussed how its harder to copy in the USA because of trademarks and copyrights. But its sad to see in China. My friends tonight are almost afraid to share their ideas. here is why

THERE ARE REPRESENTATIVES From these above MAJOR Chinese internet companies building 100s of products in their R&D departments. they will attend events, work in social media sites, and then report back to their companies the ideas – AND COPY THEM.

So how can a young entrepreneur start his internet company? his ideas are stolen before he can even develop them…by huge multimillion dollar companies. Its sad. Its amazing, and it makes you wonder how innovation can continue.
