How wonderful that you are thinking about going on exchange! I am a 5-time host mom and volunteer with YFU (Youth For Understanding).
Technically speaking, you’ll need to be between 15 and 19 in age, have decent grades (at least 3.0 on 4.0 scale), be able to get a passport and visa, be of generally good mental and physical health (mild allergies and such will likely be OK, but uncontrollable epilepsy may not be good). Unofficial requirements (and, as a note, mostly my opinion) are: a sense of adventure; the ability to be flexible (everything you’ve ever known is going to go ‘out the window’); the ability to laugh at yourself (you’re going to make mistakes); the ability to ask for help; the willingness to work out difficulties; a real desire to learn about others; and pride (not arrogance) and knowledge of your own country (you’ll be asked LOTS of questions).
To learn more, go to the website for the program you have chosen to use. If you haven’t chosen one, I would highly recommend YFU (yfuusa.org = general website, http://yfuusa.org/countries/australia-16.php for specifics about Australia). You can also join in a live online chat with an Admissions Counselor. See schedule and details at http://yfuusa.org/posts/updated-go-global-learn-more-about-yfus-high-school-study-abroad-programs-87.php.
Good luck to you!

Below is a list of AYUSA Study Abroad’s requirements (other companies have similar ones):
1) Be a high school student
2) Be 15-18 years old (14 & 19 year olds ok for some programs)
3) 2.5GPA on a 4.0 scale (exceptions considered on a case-by-case basis)
4) meet language requirement (Australia doesn’t have one!)
5) Sound and stable mental and physical health
6) Responsible, mature, adaptable, resilient, and excited about cultural exchange
7) Have parent & school support
Good luck!
