How wonderful that you are thinking of opening your home to someone! My husband and I have hosted 5 students and have found it to be addictive! I also know someone who has hosted 22 and heard of someone who hosted 26!
If I may, I would like to put in a plug for the organization through which we have hosted 4 of our students and for which I am now a volunteer: Youth For Understanding (YFU). Many (including myself) believe that YFU is the best. In a typical year, YFU brings about 2000 students to the USA and has a network of roughly 1400 volunteers nationwide to help make the year a success for everyone.
Yes, you do have to be approved in order to host a student. Your family would fill out an application, provide references, consent to a criminal background check, and have an in-home interview with a volunteer or staff member. YFU, as with most programs, does allow you to pick age, sex, native country, etc. So, for example, if you want a girl from Sweden or Norway who is X years old and plays the piano, we will look for a girl from Sweden or Norway who is X yrs old and plays the piano. If one exists, we’ll send you information about the girl so your family can decide if you want to host that student. Naturally, the earlier in the ‘placement cycle’ you start this process, the more choices you will have, but we won’t force any student on you!
Check out the links below. Feel free to email me directly (DamEngineer@msn.com) (Y!A limits the amount you can put into a Y!A email and I can never say everything I want to say inside that limit!) with more questions. If you live in Wyoming or Colorado, I can also find a local volunteer who would be happy to meet with you and your family to answer questions.
