my friend told me he takes algae, and said that is where fish get the omega 3 from, so cut out the middle man. Is this right?

Andrea, make sure that you READ the labels. the fats you WANT are Omega 3 and not Omega 6. Other than that, as long as you have a good source of Omega 3 then where ever the source comes from is perfectly acceptable by the human body.
Our modern Diet has the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 backwards and we are ingesting far too much Omega 6 and insufficient Omega 3. Omega 6 tends to be an oxidant producer in our bodies and lead to further destruction on the cellular levels, Omega 3 encourages the production of ANTI-Oxidants which tend to block these oxidants and “disarm” them. We need to increase our Omega 3 and decrease our Omega 6.

Algae can now be a source of sustainable omega-3 fatty acids, which in relatively small amounts, have been found to lower blood pressure and could ultimately lead to the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk.
I think he is right although I understand Algae to be expensive and hard to find.
