Omega 3 supplements are manufactured from oils extracted from cold water fish. Fatty fish like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon are high in two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Even though it is a well known fact that omega 3 fish reduces heart disease , improves your mind and mood , protects against some cancers and improves your immunologic system, more than 90% of the population in the western hemisphere has a fish oil deficiency.

Is it better to take fish or fish oil capsules? It should be better to take omega 3 by eating fish but unfortunately today our oceans are contaminated, specially with mercury. It may not be very important for you if you just eat fish once in a while but if you want to take fish almost every day in order to improve your omega 3 intake, it could mean too much mercury and it is safer to take the fish oil.
