I was skeptical about buying a new product with no reviews but after using it a few times I think I did the right thing. It worked right out of the box and although it would not accept my map update code it did it anyway so I guess the code is not needed if you have the lifetime update model. It comes with a car charger and a USB cable to connect to a PC and also uses the USB’s 5 volt power to charge, so you don’t need to buy the home charger if you want to do it this way. When connecting to USB you have the option to make a computer connection or just charge. Today I used it to go to a place that I have been before and it directed me to a way I didn’t know about that was a few less miles than my usual route. The spoken directions are clear and easy to understand. On major roads it knows the speed limit and shows both your actual speed and the limit, you can choose to be notified with a tone that you select if you get a little heavy with your right foot. The screen is big enough to use a finger to select menu options and type, on my last GPS I had to use a stylus due to it’s small size. The only thing that I wish it did but doesn’t is when you approach the destination it does not say which side of the street it’s on, I found this useful with my Garmin so that you know which lane to be in. So far that’s my only gripe.

UPDATE: The activation program is now working, so to be fair I’m going to update my evaluation of this GPS.
The TomTom XXL 540-TM is my 4th or 5th GPS. My most recent one being the Tomtom One-XLS. I have used GPSes to travel back and forth across the country as well as up and down both coasts, so I think that I am qualified to pass judgment on their quality. In comparison to the One-XLS I thought the display on the 540-TM was significantly improved. It was clearer, brighter and the graphics were easier to read. In addition, I think that with the larger speaker, the sound quality is better with less distortion at higher volumes. Finally, it seemed to me that the 540-TM is more responsive, with a faster start-up time and a quicker GPS lock on my location. The menus have been re-organized somewhat, with some items added and some removed in the “Preferences ” section. Still, it is still fairly easy to enter a destination, and the included User Guide covers the basics. There is a larger manual that can downloaded from the TomTom web site if you wish.
The only thing that I don’t like is the suction mounting bracket. The ball joint is quite stiff and makes adjusting the viewing angle quite difficult. Fortunately, I was able to find a replacement bracket on Amazon that appears to be much better.
All-in-all this appears to be a 1st class GPS and the lifetime updates make it a heck of a deal. Just one thing however, this is a GPS and only a GPS. It is not one of those swiss army knife gadgets that tries to do several things, none of them well. There’s no Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth, no MP3 or Video player, no family photo album. So if what you really want is a very good, responsive GPS with lifetime updates at a reasonable price (in my opinion), this may be the one for you.

If you are looking for a GPS that you can use right out of the box, don’t buy this one. The Activation Code provided in the box did not work for the unit I purchased. Tomtom Customer Service was unable to resolve the problem and was forced to escalate it for resolution to a higher level, which may take from 5 to 7 working days (or more since they do not seem to have a clue as to the cause of the problem). This is an unacceptable delay. Since the Activation Code is essential for downloading map updates, you will be forced to make do with the out-of-date maps pre-loaded on the GPS at manufacture.
I consider this to be a major support failure on the part of Tomtom. I would believe that any halfway competent company would have tested something as basic and critical as an activation code before releasing a product to the public, and would have speedy problem resolution procedures in place for those problems which might arise in rare cases. I also do not believe that getting this problem resolved should have required me to provide them with a copy of the Amazon invoice and the Activation insert from the box after I had already provided them with the serial number of the GPS and the Activation Code. I have the hardware and software to do so digitally, but if you don’t be prepared for an even longer wait as they process your FAX or snail mail response. I have been a long-time Tomtom GPS user, but find the support for this problem extremely disappointing.

Information about the 540TM is currently pretty sparse, so I thought I’d list what you get.
In addition to the manual, USB cable and sticky mounting pad, you get the new combined power cord and traffic receiver. This cord looks like the old power cord (I have a 335S), with the exception of a small pod (about 1.5″ x 0.75″) near the GPS connector. The cord is also flat instead of round, probably because it has more wires in it.
The “Lifetime Maps” option comes in the form of a voucher card. You enter the magic number into the TomTom Home “use activation code” screen.
(Update 5/5/2010 – there were initially some problems getting up-to-date maps, but they seem to be resolved now).
Out-of-the-box version info:
App 9.051.503855.2, OS 483784 (1016, 2/27/2010) GPS V1.20, Boot 5.5237
Map: “USA_Canada_and_Mexico_P’ v835.2419 (From August, 2009)
The traffic receiver worked well – I’m actually on Camano Island, WA, about 50 miles NW of Seattle. There are 4 RDS/TMC stations in Seattle. The receiver locked on easily once I got out from behind the 500ft. hill between me and Seattle. I requested a route to Portland, OR and it knew about traffic problems in Portland – pretty cool.
I had one problem – it kept continually replotting a route to Portland even after I’d told the Traffic Preferences to “ask before changing the route”. Turning the GPS off and on seems to have fixed the problem.
There’s also an option to decrease the time (in minutes) between traffic updates. It’s possible that the traffic information was changing so rapidly it basically locked up the GPS, hence the option to slow down the updates.
I was able to transfer my Favorites from my 335S (copy “mapsettings.cfg”).
