Very unsatisfied with this purchase. It wasn’t the GPS it was the merchant xtreme navigation. DON’T do business with them. I purchased a refurbished GPS. The first one they sent me the battery didn’t charge. I returned it they sent me another one this time not only didn’t the battery stay charged for more than 1 hour but after one use the maps n longer loaded. Returned again 3rd time never fails WRONG. They sent me the same one I returned to them the first time Battery still didn’t charge and the software in it was different! I spent $35 in returning this item to them now I am waiting for them to give me a FULL refund – their policy says 20% restocking for returned items, but since the item is consistantly faulty I better not get charged – and yes I did ask for a new one they told me they didn’t have any. Will never buy from them again

The unit is one of Garmin’s high units with many features. Garmin’s website suggests the price is $599.99 not the $649.99 suggested by Amazon. I bought mine from Meijer for $438.77 with tax and shipping included.

Garmin software dept says that the additional maps offered for the 765T will NOT have lane assist and 3D mapping no earlier than end of 2009! So if you need a gps now and want to use it in other places besides the pre-loaded maps, forget the 765T till next year; instead, save your money and buy the 760. Same unit without the added functionality won’t be useful till later anyway.
AMENDMENT 20OCT2008: Let me clarify to all- I BOUGHT THE 765T UNIT AND THE AUSTRALIA ADD-ON MAP ON SD; FOUND OUT THIS MAP DOES NOT PROVIDE LANE ASSIST AND 3-D BUILDING REFERENCES; AFTER CHASING DOWN 4 TECH REPS WHO GAVE CONFLICTING INFO OR “I DUNNO”, FINALLY CONFIRMED W/ GARMIN NONE OF THE ADD-ON COUNTRY MAPS HAVE THE LANE ASSIST OR 3-D BUILDING REFERENCES & AUSTRALIA WILL “LIKELY BE UPDATED AT END OF 2009.”
As for the rating: 1) The product does not do what the literature says it would do (and more importantly its limitations); 2) I recently moved to Sydney and paid the premium for the 765T specifically for added functionality, eg., lane assist. 3) I had to really beg Garmin just to confirm what I was experiencing after paying full retail for this item- poor form, Garmin; hence the 1-star.
That said, I’m not sour on the company or the 765T. Garmin makes good units and their nav engine is one of the most accurate and quickest. I would’ve appreciated clearer marketing and specifications material, though, thus saving 5.75hrs of my life trying to troubleshoot and talking to tech support.
I’m going back to the 760, which is the original unit I researched, but chose to forgo to try the 765T. I need a gps that works now, not “likely at end of 2009″. It’s too bad I had to find out the hard way the added functionality doesn’t work there for now. My mistake hopefully is your gain.
21OCT2008: And another thing- Garmin also admitted these added functionality features – lane assist and 3-D buildings refs – “may not work on all roads” with the pre-loaded USA map and even less so on the 775T European map. When I pressed him, he said, “In fact, the vast majority of roads won’t have the lane assist layered into the pre-loaded maps; only the major ones. But, I can’t tell you for sure. It’s a new technology and none of us here have a working device to try.” Ooookay, then… mov’n on… Well at least I got to talk to a US citizen…
Take what you can from this and a dude who bought it and went thru the pain of “tech” support.
