Tonight I managed to see the premiere of ‘Overheard’ (窃听风云), starring Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Daniel Wu. Here’s a brief non-spoiler review
From the team behind “Infernal Affairs” and “Protégé,” this is a financial thriller about stock-market manipulation. Three Criminal Intelligence Bureau cops become increasingly thrilled by the secrets they hear while conducting surveillance on a listed company, without knowing that it is a path of no return.
The three leads play police officers who are experts in electronic surveillance. They are assigned to a case of suspected insider stock trading. As you can probably guess, they hear something dangerious and one thing leads to another and next thing you know they’re ‘in too deep’.
The movie is pretty well written, good dialogue, etc. it even has some social commentary on HK’s day-trading/investment craze culture. Its written by the same guys who did Infernal Affairs, they also co-directed it too apparently. The film has some good chemistry between the actors, including the supporting actors. The always excellent Zhang Jingchu plays Lau’s love interest as well as the ex-wife of his colleague, played by Alex Fong. Michael Wong also has a large part as a financial tychoon on the other side of the financial machinations.
I enjoyed the movie, but I should warn you, its not really an action movie at all. Its more of a suspense drama type film. it is quite dark and depressing at points, but it also has a good bit of humor mixed in to keep you from getting too down.
One small problem – I thought the ending was a bit too much, but maybe its just me…. oh and Grace Huang’s part was not nearly long enough
