Internet

I like Youtube, and other copier in china like youku.com or ku6.com where I can see lots of soap opera without the television, only get a laptop. But it seems the TV programme provider make a lot loss before such online video websites, see the news as below:

In news being reported by China Tech News, China International Television Corporation, an affiliate of CCTV, is using the Chinese courts to fight six online video service providers, including ku6.com, 6.cn and aeeboo.com. I see some resemblance to what we saw in the West a few years ago over music and video sharing sites.

According to the report, Beijing’s Haidian District Court has already issued a preliminary order and judgment that the online video service providers had violated the rights of CCTV and has asked them to stop the infringement and compensate CCTV. CCTV is asking for CNY16.2 million in compensation.

CCTV says its distribution of TV soap operas has declined since last year due to the illegal broadcasting of these TV shows by these online video service providers. I am also thinking the lost of advertising revenue is a strong motivator for bringing this action.

However, a representative from ku6.com was cited by local media as saying that most of the online video programs on their website were uploaded by the Internet users instead of the website itself. Although, this has tended to be the defense of other P2P and content sharing sites from the West it was not good enough to stop the fines and legal battles so I look interestingly at what happens here in China. Given the legal attention that YouTube and Google Video received over copyrighted music and music videos they have removed this content or entered into commercial deals with the studios.
